Naming

Sticks and stones leave an impression. And so does the right name.

We believe blending in is boring. And that your name becomes the essence of your brand.

A memorable, thoughtful moniker is essential to stand out from the pack. It’s your first chance to be different and give a strong, clear first impression that supports your brand and tells a story. Whether you smile when you hear it or it takes a more serious bent, your name is your big chance to start creating an emotional connection with your customers.

Ultimately, the idea is to create a name for your company, service or product that has a personality and attitude – a name that comes to life. If it creates curiosity, starts a conversation and sparks a passion, all the better.

Over the years, we’ve been hired to work on naming projects for companies such as Nike, Abercrombie & Fitch, Mentor Graphics and Centex Homes.

Since your name will likely stay with you for life, naming is far from a simple process and can prove an extremely challenging task that can take weeks or months. Pitfalls include relying heavily on focus groups and having too many company decision-makers involved, which tends to water things down and result in neutered, generic or nonsensical names.

Our goal is to develop a name for your brand that reflects your promises, values, personality and identity to win the hearts and minds of your customers.

Because in today’s crowded world, the difference between success and extinction can be just a word.

We consulted with a start-up mortgage company in 2004 to discover a name that was distinctive, but not too out of place in the conservative financial services industry. Plum Tree Mortgage was planted.

“We didn’t want to be synonymous with everyone else. With the marketplace so cluttered, a unique name makes it easier to build a brand around,” said Josh Leake, principal of Plum Tree, named after the fruit-bearing tree and intended to evoke the notions of luxury, royalty and wisdom. “With Plum Tree, we’re not confused with other companies. And it’s memorable.”
